Wallingford-Swarthmore School Taxes To Rise By 3.2%

When your school tax bill arrives in the mail shortly you will be greeted by an increase of 3.2%.

The school board approved the $84.6 million 2019-2020 budget on June 10. For a home assessed at the district average of $179,000 with a current annual school tax bill of about $8,100, the new budget would result in an additional $260 in taxes.

Under the state’s Act 1 index for the district, Wallingford-Swarthmore’s tax hike would be limited to 2.3%, but the district is taking advantage of a permitted exception for special education costs that will tack on an additional 0.9%.

3 Percent Tax Hike For 2017-2018 WSSD Budget Proposed

The proposed 2017-2018 Wallingford Swarthmore District budget of over $79 million calls for a 3% increase in school taxes.

The average homeowner with an assessed value of $179,000 can expect to pay an additional $228 in school taxes. The hike includes 0.5% to help with rising pension costs.

Salaries and benefits for employees account for to 72% of the district’s costs and state mandated pension contributions will increase $500,000 to $5.4 million in the proposed budget.

Local taxes account for 77.37% of the district’s budget contributing approximately $71,425,290 to revenue.

Strath Haven HS Named Among 10 Area Schools Receiving Blue Ribbon Honors

U.S. Secretary of education John King designated Strath Haven High School and 9 other area schools as winners of the 2016 National Blue Ribbon of excellence.

Only 329 schools across the nation were singled out for this prestigious honor. Schools win the honor for excellence in academics or for their work in narrowing the achievement gap among groups of students. Wissahickon High School was the only other high school in the area named as an award winner.

In the past Nether Providence Elementary, Swarthmore-Rutledge, Wallingford Elementary, and Strath Haven High School have all been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.

Strath Haven High School has also been recognized as one of “America’s Outstanding High Schools” by US News & World Report and Newsweek magazines.

US News Ranks Strath Haven #7 Among High Schools In PA

Strath Haven High School has been ranked #7 among 676 high schools in 582 school districts across Pennsylvania in the 2016 U.S. News And World Report of Best High Schools survey.

Two other Central League schools were also in the top 10 rankings statewide – Connestoga High School was #3 and Lower Merion was #5.

The U.S. News survey ranks more than 21,000 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments, their graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college

3.9 Percent Hike In School Taxes Proposed For Wallingford Swarthmore

The Wallingford Swarthmore School Board voted in a January meeting to approve a $77.6 million budget for the fiscal year 2016 – 2017 fiscal year.

The budget calls for a 3.9% increase in school taxes for district residents. Last year’s tax hike was 2.56% and increase in the past decade have been in the 2% range. This increase will be the largest since fiscal year 2008 – 2009, when it was 5.8%.

The major expenditures for 2016 – 2017 would be state mandated pension costs, with an increase of $717,000 for an overall total of $4.9 million, rising health insurance costs, and contractual agreements with teachers and other employees which constitute 71% of the $77.6-million budget.

The proposed budget still needs two more board approvals and the district is hoping to trim expenditures prior to final approval of the budget in June.

The current hike if approved would translate into an additional $290 in school taxes for a home assessed at the district average of $179,000. The average school tax bill in such a scenario would rise to approximately $7,730.
