Rutledge Borough Hall
Rutledge Borough is the smallest community within the Wallingford Swarthmore School District with approximately 265 households and 784 residents. Rutledge, Pennsylvania – zip code 19070 – was founded in 1885, when a group of Philadelphia businessmen known as the Rutledge Land Improvement Association, purchased most of the land that makes up the present day community. The Borough was incorporated in 1887 and occupies an area of approximately four blocks by three blocks.
A sign located at the corner of Swarthmore and Morton Avenue erroneously attributes the origin of the name of the Borough to the Ann Rutledge a former girlfriend of Abraham Lincoln.
The true source of the name Rutledge was identified by the community’s founders to have been derived from a mystery/romance novel by Miriam Harris which was published in 1860 and aptly entitled Rutledge. The story is based in 1850’s New York City and the Rutledge Plantation in the New York countryside.
A promotional brochure from 1897 describes the Borough in glowing terms:
Located ten miles from Philadelphia, on the line of the Central Division of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad, three minutes walk from Morton Station – it is reached in from 20 to 30 minutes by 21 trains daily… To the west lies the magnificent Swarthmore College, and to the southeast, three miles away, lies the Delaware River… its school is one of the finest in the county; its houses are neat and attractive, and their owners take great pride in their homes and the adornment of their grounds.
Homes in Rutledge Borough have an average age of 107 and consist of an eclectic mix of styles including a number of classic Victorians singles. Sixty nine homes are recorded as being built prior to 1900. The average size of a Rutledge home is approximately 1,957 square feet occupying a lot of about 10,271 square feet. Taxes in the Borough averaged $6,888 in 2017.
