With an estimated price tag for repairs and renovations estimated to be $3 million an 11 member study committee has determined the Summit School in such poor shape it should be demolished. Nether Providence acquired the former Summit School property three years ago. The township commissioners agreed with that conclusion and authorized the solicitation of bids for razing the structure at the Plush Mill Road site. As to what might happen next with the property, the study committee has recommended: the development of new athletic fields and a playground; the construction of a community center; and possibly the addition of a passive park, bird sanctuary and/or walking trail.

Pending Wallingford Swarthmore School District (WSSD) School Board approval, expected as early as it’s January meeting, the Summit School property on Plush Mill Road will be sold to Nether Providence Township. The Township Board of Commissioners approved the terms of the sale negotiated with the school board in December.

WSSD announced in May it’s intention to sell the 10.4 acre site which includes the circa 1957 school building and adjacent woods and playing fields. Negotiations between the township and school board have been ongoing for several months. The township would maintain the property for recreational open space and it has long been used by the Nether Providence Athletic Association (NPAA) as a site for preschool and elementary school age soccer programs.

It is expected that the current tenants since 2010 – the Stage One organization, also known as the Performing Arts Complex of Delaware County – will seek to continue operations at the property. The facility also became home in the fall to The Creative Living Room (TCLR), which formerly based it’s operation in Swarthmore.

Nether Providence Township has announced the return of it’s always popular Summer Camp for 2018. The camp is for children entering kindergarten through 5th grade as of September 2018. The camp will run from June 25, 2018 to July 26, 2018 and will be held at Nether Providence Elementary School (NPE). Camp hours run from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM – Monday Thru Thursday.

Fees for the 5 week program are $280 for kindergartners and $255 for older attendees. Registration begins on Monday April 9, 2018 at the Nether Providence Township Building located at 214 Sykes Lane, Wallingford, PA. Hours for registration are from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM – Monday thru Friday. The Township will not be offering a Pre School program this summer.

Nether Providence Township residents will be enrolled first and non resident applicants will be processed in the order in which they were received beginning Monday May 7, 2018, based upon availability.
