No Tax Increase Sought For 2019 Delaware County Budget

The County Council announced earlier this month that Delaware County homeowners will see no increase in their county tax bills in 2019. The proposed budget if adopted by County Council would mark the the fifth year in a row with no tax increase.

The total proposed General Fund expenditures are $354.8 million for 2019, a decrease in spending of $2.2 million from 2018 expenditures of about $357 million. Pass-through federal and state grants, mostly to human services programs, total an additional $307.86 million.

The proposed 2019 budget is available for public inspection at the Office of the County Clerk, located on the 2nd floor of the Government Center, and can be viewed online. A budget hearing will be conducted on Wednesday, December 5, at 6 PM in the County Council Meeting Room (201 W. Front St., Media), and County Council will consider the 2019 budget ordinance at two of its regular meetings on Wednesday December 5 and December 12.

The county millage rate will remain at 5.604 mills.

In practical terms this means that the County tax will be $5.604 for every $1,000 of assessed value. For example the County tax bill for a home assessed at $100,000 would be $560.40.

Why Do We Vote On Tuesdays In November?

Have you ever wondered why Federal Election Day is always held on a Tuesday in November? The establishment of Tuesday as the day for elections was formalized in the mid 1800’s, and is rooted in the preferred method of transport at that time – the horse and buggy.

Voting locations in the mid 19th century were generally located in the county seat, not necessarily around the corner from the majority of the rural population, so voters needed a horse and buggy to travel to polling places. Most people had to travel an entire day to cast their vote, so Monday was not possible since it would entail traveling on Sunday, the Sabbath, and travel was frowned upon on that day.

Wednesday was ruled out as a candidate, since in a highly agrarian society it was often market day. So Tuesday became the day of choice for voting – travel to vote on Monday, vote on Tuesday, and return for market day on Wednesday. With that reasoning Congress set Tuesday as the day for Federal elections in 1845.

November was chosen as a preferable time of year to vote due to the fact that the Fall harvest season was over, and in the majority of the Union the weather was still favorable enough to permit travel over unimproved roads.

Tuesday November 6, 2018 is Election Day please remember to get out and vote!

Nether Providence Township is divided into 7 wards and each are divided into 2 precincts. Each ward and precinct has an established a voting location for Tuesday’s election. There are a total of 8 voting locations in the township. There have been some polling location changes since the last election.

If you do not know what ward you live in check the map of Nether Providence Township wards. By entering your street address you can also check the PA Department Of State polling location information lookup for your specific voting location.

Voting locations in Nether Providence Township will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Exercise your right to vote on Tuesday November 6, 2018!

Wallingford Electronic Ewaste Recycling Event – November 3, 2018

Unwanted E-Waste Will Be Collected At The Recycling Event

St John Chrysostom Church is sponsoring an electronic recycling event on Saturday November 3, 2018 from 9 AM to 1 PM in the rear parking lot of the Church, located at 615 S Providence Road in Wallingford.

You can recycle all sorts of electronics – in working condition or not – including laptops, PCs, printers, TVs, phones, and game systems at no charge. Large items such such as air conditioners will be charged a recycling fee.

St John’s is partnering in this event with PAR RECYCLE WORKS – a local nonprofit that sells reusable materials collected from electronic devices to help pay for salaries and job skill development for formerly incarcerated men and women, in order to support their productive re-entry back into society. Strawberry Festival – Monday June 4, 2018 – Wallingford Presybterian Church

The always popular Strawberry Festival sponsored by Wallingford Presbyterian Church will be held on Monday June 4, 2018, from 5:00-8:00 PM, rain or shine. Mark the date on your calendar and join the over 1,000 people who enjoy this much anticipated annual community event. This year marks the 69th festival that has been celebrated.

There will be lots to eat – hoagies, roast beef sandwiches, hot dogs, ice cream, cake and of course – strawberries.

Between food trips, take time to allow the kids to try out all of the games and one of the three moon bounces while you shop for Attic Treasures, used books and live plants. If there is no parking in the church lot, there should be space on the street, at Wallingford Elementary School, or the Wallingford SEPTA train station.

The festival is held on the Church grounds located at 110 East Brookhaven Road Wallingford, PA 19086.

The festival has been an annual event since 1949 with the exception of 1953. The inaugural festival was announced in June 1949 in the Church Bulletin:

A family Strawberry Festival is being planned by the Monday Evening Guild for tomorrow evening, June 6, from 7 to 9 o’clock, on the church lawn. Strawberries, ice cream, and msical entertainment will be offered. All members of the Church and the community are invited. In case of inclement weather the Festival will be held June 7th.
